Upcoming Events

Dear Ravanica Parishioners,

As you are aware, St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral “Ravanica” along with Beograd Lodge 98 is hosting the 68th annual SNF Summer Golf Tournament.

The Host Committee, chaired by Rande Somma, has been working diligently to plan and coordinate the tournament.  For those of you who are not familiar with this golf event, it is a wonderful, family gathering attended by Serbs from around the country.  The attendees look forward to getting together each summer in a different location to play golf and enjoy the friendships they’ve made through the years.  It has become a family tradition for many and part of their annual summer vacation.  Given that it is in Detroit, if you are a golfer, take advantage of the opportunity to play.  Entry fees for adults is $220.00 and juniors (through age 17) is $195.00.  The entry fee includes greens fees, practice on the range prior to golf, admission to all evening socials and the awards dinner.  Golf will commence on Thursday, August 6th through Saturday, August 8th.  In addition, there is a welcome dance and golf registration Wednesday evening, August 5th.  For those wishing to golf, please note you must be a member of the Serb National Federation.   If you would like to become a member, please contact Alex Bogoevich at (586) 997-0945.

The future of this event is dependent on our youth becoming involved.  With this in mind, we’ve arranged, at no charge, two special activities for the junior golf participants. Cherry Creek Golf Club will host a junior clinic on Wednesday and a Big Break skills competition on Thursday.  If your junior plays golf, this is a great opportunity for him/her to learn some golf skills and meet other young Serbs along the way.

You are the key to our financial success.  The committee has been busy setting the stage and now we need the Ravanica faithful to step up and help us implement our plan. The cornerstone to the financial success of this tournament is SPONSORSHIP.  Its purpose is to raise the necessary funds to underwrite the cost of this endeavor and ensure a positive outcome.  The traditional approach has been to put together an “ad book”  but, after thoughtful consideration, Church President, Milos Saravolatz along with David Barach have worked and implemented a new program. It incorporates multiple donor levels and is a good fit for every budget.  Please read the program outline and decide which level is right for your family, complete the form and send it in with your check or credit card information. Your participation is crucial if we are to have a successful event. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.

As hosts, we have an obligation to welcome our guests, to be good “domacins”.  Detroit has always enjoyed a great reputation offering wonderful food, great music and warm hospitality.  That, however, is not our only obligation. Our second obligation is to our church,  in the capacity of volunteerism.  We mentioned earlier, our host committee has been meeting monthly.  With the tournament approaching, it’s time to ask Ravanica parishioners to step up and lend a hand.  If we all take a shift or two, the work load will be handled with ease.

Please commit to helping our church make this tournament a success by donating your time. The following is a list of the committee chairpeople and their contact information.  Call and sign up today!!!

NEW SACRAMENTAL TABLE ICONS

On Sunday September 17, 2006, three new Icons for Venerating Tables have been blessed by our Clergy. These Icons are work of a professional Greek Orthodox iconographer from Detroit, and they are gifts to our Cathedral from our parishioners.

Icon of Our Lord Jesus Christ is donated to our Church by Ivo and Merica Raskovic with their sons as 2007 St. Sava Kumovi.

Icon of The Most Holy Mother of God is donated to by Pavle and Donna Bielich in memory of their parents Nikola and Donna.

Icon of St. Great Martyr Prince Lazar holding our Ravanica is donated by Alexander and Mary Pavlovich as 2006 Vidovdan Kumovi.

These beautiful and precious new Icons are hand made in Byzantium Style of Iconography, and they are taking place of old Icons that have been in use since the Consecration of Church 40 years ago. The new Icons are matching the wooden Cross donated to our Church by Berar family, work of the same craftsman.
