Teaching The Young The Path of Orthodoxy...

St. Lazarus Ravanica Sunday School program develops our children into good Christians, teaching them to use Orthodoxy in their everyday lives...

Welcome to St. Lazarus’ “Ravanica’s” Church School

 We offer classes for children from Pre-school through Grade 12.  Our youngest students begin by learning to cross themselves and proper Church behavior.  As students progress in the program they learn about Sacraments and the traditions that are part of the Serbian Orthodox Church.  Students have the opportunity to serve the Church as Altar boys or Epistle readers.  They will also have the opportunity to participate in our many programs:  Saint Nicholas, Christmas, Saint Sava, Kumovi Day, Vrbica (Lazarus Saturday), Pascha – which will be a great time to invite grandparents and other family members to see. Our youngest students begin by learning to cross themselves and proper Church behavior.  As students progress in the program they learn about Sacraments and the traditions that are part of the Serbian Orthodox

Shadeland’s the place for a winter retreat or summer camp!

With the completion of the new dormitory, the Eastern Diocese expands Shadeland to a year round retreat facility.

Usually the sounds of children’s voices are heard in July and August at St. Sava Camp, Shadeland, but this year for several days before the New Year, the familiar sounds of laughter and chatter filled the dormitories  READ MORE

Church-School Registration

“Let the little children come to Me,

And do not forbid them;

For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven”

(Matthew 19:14)

Year after year our Church School Teachers and Superintendents are giving their best to teach our children the basics of Orthodox Christianity and how to build their faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ.  This process of perfecting our faith never ends, but it starts right here.

Registration for the next school year will be held on September 10th, 2006, the first Sunday after Labor Day.  We offer free catechism for children from pre-school to 12th grade.  Our youngest students begin by learning to cross themselves and proper Church behavior.  As students progress in the program they learn about Sacraments and the traditions that are part of the Serbian Orthodox Church.  Students have the opportunity to serve the Church as Altar boys or Epistle readers.  They will also have the opportunity to participate in our many programs:  Saint Nicholas, Christmas, Saint Sava, Godparent Day, Vrbica (Lazarus Saturday), Pascha – which will be a great time to invite grandparents and other family members to see.

Church School Teachers' Seminar in Detroit a Success

On Saturday, February 18, 2006, our St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Detroit, Michigan, hosted a workshop/seminar for clergy and church school teachers for the Detroit Deanery. Our guest speaker, Rev. Father Radovan Jakovljevic, Director of Christian Education of the Midwestern Metropolitanate, conducted a Power Point presentation on the topic "Teaching Teachers to Teach." We were delighted to welcome over twenty teachers and educators, along with six local clergymen, who eagerly and joyfully took part in this seminar.

The presentation was based on a "How To" method which covered long-standing issues in teaching, such as - the role of a teacher, curriculum decisions teachers must make, teaching activities, educational resources, teaching strategies, lesson planning, the system/guidance of asking questions, objectives and goals, creative use of the media, and many other topics were covered. Father Radovan explained the different methods and techniques that teachers can use in preparing and conducting effective lesson plans and educational programs. After the presentation, many teachers participated in discussions concerning current situations in our church schools, such as the weaknesses and strengths of our educational programs, and the various methods used in teaching children about our Orthodox faith.

Later that evening the teachers attended the Vespers service in our Cathedral, followed by a "Teen Retreat" in our Social Center. The following day after liturgy, Fr. Radovan visited with our church school children. He also met with teachers to discuss various educational needs, and to answer some of the interesting questions posed by students about our Orthodox Faith.
Overall, the seminar was educational, informational and beneficial to our teachers who expressed their desire and willingness to organize more seminars of this kind.
